Acts 7:54-60

The story of Stephen (part 3)

The ending to Stephen's story tells us two truths

You will have enemies

The audience to Stephen's speech were absolutely outraged at what they heard him say; but why?

His words were strong. Stephen was not holding back with what he told them. He spoke about their sin, pointing out how they were no better than their sinful ancestors and still loved their sin. Finally, he spoke about Jesus as the Son of God, as one with God. THis pushed them over the edge. This was blasphemy to their Jewish ears. Their reaction was as hypocritical as Stephen said they were. THey claimed to love the law of Moses and there they were inciting mob violence which without a trial was forbidden according the Moses.

You must love your enemies

Just like Jesus, Stephen asked God to forgive his murderers. How could he love them and forgive them?

Stephen believed in a God who would judge justly, but a God who was forigiving of all sins. He had seen the glory of God and wanted everyone to see it, even those who hated him.

A note of hope - Stephen's prayer was answered in at least one of those: Saul!
